Paediatric First Aid
Key Points:
Rescuer should perform assessment for signs of life (circulation) simultaneously with breathing assessment and during the delivery of rescue breaths. High quality CPR is essential:
Start with 5 rescue breaths (5:30:2) then 30:2
Chest compressions are 4cm for an infant and 5cm for a child depth (at least one third the anterior-posterior diameter of the chest).
Sequence is: 5 Rescue breaths, 30 chest compressions, 2 chest compression, delivery of rescue breaths should take no longer than 10 seconds.
chest compression rate 100-120 a minute, allowing for the full recoil of the chest after each chest compression.
Mobile Phone - Place on speaker function and call 999.
If there is trauma from a fall and you suspect a spinal injury avoid moving into recovery position, if the airway can be maintained in current position leave as they are. Always seek advice from 999 specialist advise and support.
